Chunghwa Telecom to launch G.fast in Q4
Chunghwa Telecom on Monday announced that it will commercially launch G.fast technology to boost fixed broadband speeds in the fourth quarter of this year.
The Taiwanese telco is rolling out a fibre-to-the-premises network - using a combination of fibre and copper – to homes and businesses to help meet demand for 4K TV services and HD video. It is deploying Alcatel-Lucent's GPON and G.fast technologies.

The project will enable Chunghwa to provide high-speed broadband to "tens of thousands of homes" within two years, the telco said. It will also meet regulatory targets for boosting fixed broadband access in hard to reach areas.
"We have made great strides in proactively improving our broadband network service in recent years, and we are pleased to become the first G.fast commercial broadband service provider in the world," said Chunghwa Telecom president Mu-Piao Shih.
As it stands, no other operator has commercially launched high-speed broadband with G.fast.
"By adding our G.fast technology to its portfolio, Chunghwa Telecom can better meet the demands of any deployment scenario to quickly and cost-effectively connect customers with the highest speeds in a highly competitive market," added Ken Wu, managing director of Alcatel-Lucent Taiwan.
