Facebook and Google dominate 2015 US apps chart

26-12-2015 | Global Updates
Media market tracker Nielsen has published its data on the most used smartphone apps in the US over the course of this year and it's dominated by Facebook and Google.

The clear number one is Facebook itself, which had an average of nearly 127 million users every month in what is presumably its biggest country. In second place was YouTube, but it was significantly behind with almost 98 million users per month. Its share of data consumption, however, must have been much higher.

In third, and the fastest grower, was Facebook Messenger, which saw its usage grow by 31% to 96.5 million, and is the clear IM leader in the US. Maybe Facebook has made the strategic decision to favour Messenger over Whatsapp, which it acquired in 2014, in the Us.

The rest of the list is dominated by the big Google products that all Android users are steered towards using, however their growth is pretty flat. At the bottom of the list, and growing more quickly, are Facebook-owned Instagram and a couple of Apple products including Apple Music, which only launched this year but may have been pushed to iPhone owners.
