Telenor, Ooredoo cut prices in scramble for mobile data users

Competition in Myanmar's nascent mobile data segment has begun to heat up, with the market's two newcomers, Ooredoo and Telenor going toe-to-toe on pricing, the Myanmar Times writes.

Qatari-backed Ooredoo cut the price of its data services from MMK10 (USD0.009) to MMK6 per MB with its ‘PhalanPhalan Internet’ promotion late last week in response to a similar offer introduced by its Norwegian-owned rival.

Telenor’s ‘My Internet’ plan had lowered mobile data rates to MMK5 per MB from MMK6, whilst its ‘Smart Internet’ offering had trimmed the price for downloads to MMK6 per MB from its previous level of MMK10 per MB. Customers of Telenor’s My Internet plan can also purchase data packages of 100MB and 500MB for MMK500 and MMK1,900 respectively.

Commenting on the price cut, Telenor CEO Petter Furberg said in a statement: ‘Myanmar’s telecoms sector is rapidly evolving, and we estimate that approximately 65% [of the] subscribers in the country are on smartphones. Within our own base of 6.4 million customers, 65% are data users and close to 60% are smartphone users. Our new internet price plan both reflects the growing appetite for data in Myanmar and is aimed at stimulating further internet adoption and usage.’

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Ooredoo had 3.33 million subscribers on its 3G-only network at end-March 2015, whilst an estimated one million of Telenor’s 6.39 million mobile users were 3G subscribers.
