Viettel to officially invest in Myanmar after receiving investment licence
Myanmar's newly-licensed fourth mobile operator will use the brand name Mytel, and will aim to differentiate by targeting rural areas and competing on price.
Myanmar is the largest foreign market Viettel up to now. Myanmar's population is close to 60 million people. The strength of the joint venture is a combination of Viettel experienced international investors and knowledge of the local partners. Venture aims launched after 12 months and covered 95% of the population of Myanmar within 3 years.
Mr Le Dang Dung, Deputy General Director of Viettel Group said: “The view of Viettel from establishment is built network better than the best network there. We will build a modern telecommunications network, widely throughout Myanmar, and will try to attempt to do very quickly.”
Myanmar is in the overall strategy of Viettel to expand the market, especially the developing countries in Asia.
Invest to the 10th foreign market, Viettel will continue to bring knowledge and experience, the best things that Viettel has ever done in Vietnam and other countries to Myanmar. Accordingly, Viettel will continue the long-term and sustainable investment strategy, telecommunications is considered national infrastructure. This is one of the factors leading to success of Viettel in the markets.
As before, in each country, Viettel has a separate brand name, the brand name of that country. Viettel joint venture in Myanmar was officially selected Mytel is the brand name for Myanmar. Mytel is an international name in English, but still showing the combined Ethnic "My" in "Myanmar" and "Tel" in "Telecom" to create telecom brand of Myanmar. Mytel also be interpreted as my mobile network (My Telecom), showing respect, listening to the unique needs of each customer.
The Myanmar Times cites the new company's external relations officer as stating that Mytel will make use of the telecoms assets used by Star High Public Company's state-owned parent company Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC). MEC owns MECtel, a state operator with access to extensive tower and fiber
Mytel also plans to utilize capacity on the Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) subsea cable, which lands in Myanmar. According to the report, state operator MPT acts as a co-landing party for the connection but does not participate directly in the project.
